LIWA: Construction of the Wadi Al-Zahimi Dam in Liwa has reached 50 per cent completion, with the RO 10.00 million project on track for completion in early 2027 as Oman steps up investment in water infrastructure to strengthen long-term water security and mitigate flood risks.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources said the strategic project in North Al Batinah Governorate has progressed steadily since construction began in April 2025, despite the engineering and logistical challenges associated with large-scale water infrastructure projects.
Nasser bin Ali al Marshoudi, Director-General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in North Al Batinah, said work remained on schedule and reflected the ministry's commitment to expanding sustainable water resources across the governorate.
The dam is being built to the latest engineering standards and will measure 950 metres in length and 21 metres in height. Once completed, it will have a storage capacity of about six million cubic metres of water, allowing it to capture substantial volumes of rainwater and wadi runoff that would otherwise be lost.
Al Marshoudi said the project forms a key part of the ministry's strategy to improve water resource management in North Al Batinah, where groundwater supplies play a critical role in supporting agriculture and local communities.
Beyond water storage, the dam is expected to recharge aquifers, raising groundwater levels and supporting the sustainability of wells and traditional aflaj irrigation systems. This, in turn, will provide farmers with a more reliable water source, helping expand agricultural activity and improve crop production.
The project also has an important flood protection role. By regulating runoff during periods of heavy rainfall, the dam is expected to reduce the risk of flash floods and help safeguard villages, residential areas and public and private infrastructure in the Wilayat of Liwa.
According to the ministry, construction is scheduled for completion and the dam is expected to be officially inaugurated in early February 2027.
